VERBS WITH DIRECT OBJECTS DIRECT OBJECTS Receives the action of the verb Answers Whom? or What? of the verb It is usually a noun or pronoun DIRECT OBJECTS Direct object follows the verb Two or more direct objects form a compound direct object EXAMPLES: Subject Verb Direct Object Television employs many workers. Employs whom? Television shows require writers and editors. Require what? TRANSITIVE VS. INTRANSITIVE When an action verb has a direct object to complete its meaning it is a transitive verb An action verb that has no direct object is an intransitive verb Since linking verbs do not convey action and don’t have direct objects, they are always intransitive EXAMPLES: Transitive: Writers prepare scripts. (Prepare what? scripts) Intransitive: Some viewers laugh loudly. Others frown. EXAMPLES: Transitive: Some scripts entertain viewers. Intransitive: Some scripts entertain. PRACTICE: S V DO V DO Many workers create a show for TV. S The producer chooses a script and a director. DO PRACTICE: S V The director makes many DO decisions. S V Creative designers have planned DO the sets.
