The students swam in gym class. transitive verb – expresses an action directed toward a person or thing named in the sentence ex) I ate a huge meal. The boy kicked the ball. intransitive verb – expresses action or a state of being without reference to an object ex) I ate ravenously. The boy ran around the track. Why know the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs? It’s in the dictionary! Depending on how they are used, some words can be both transitive and intransitive!
