verb – a word that expresses an action or a state of
being
ex) I am hungry.
I ate a big lunch.
verb phrase – consists of the main verb and
its helping verbs
ex) I will be hungry after soccer practice.
I could have eaten a horse!
linking verb – a verb that helps to make
statement by serving as a link
between two words
- must be followed by a noun or pronoun
that renames it or an adjective that
describes it
- most common ones are forms of “be”
ex) I am hungry.
She is the teacher.
The school lunches taste funny.
action verb – a verb that shows an action
ex) I ate a huge meal.
The boy kicked the ball.
The students swam in gym class.
transitive verb – expresses an action directed
toward a person or thing
named in the sentence
ex) I ate a huge meal.
The boy kicked the ball.
intransitive verb – expresses action or a state
of being without reference to an object
ex) I ate ravenously.
The boy ran around the track.
