Julius Caesar
I was a great general who was admired by
Romans for my bravery and skills in battle.
From 58 BC to 50 BC I conquered Gaul,
present day France.
Because I was a great general, I earned
political power and ruled Rome with Pompey
and Crassus.
For 10 years, the three ruled Rome until
Pompey became jealous and attempted to
rule alone.
Caesar confronted Pompey, who fled Rome.
For a year, Caesar and his men chased
Pompey and eventually defeated him.
Caesar returned to Rome and named
himself dictator for life.
Some were upset that Caesar killed Pompey
to gain complete power of Rome.

The Senate was especially mad at Caesar for killing
Pompey. Senators attacked Caesar and stabbed him
to death.
The Senate
renamed me
Augustus, or
“revered one”
Augustus/Octavian

After Marc Antony’s death, I gained limitless power of Rome.
I gave all my power to the Senate, but since I was the most
powerful member of the Senate, I lost no power.
•
I was Caesar’s adopted son, and I took over
rule of Rome with Caesar’s assistant Marc
Antony.
After my father was killed, I was dedicated
to avenging my father’s death.
After the murderers fled Rome, I caught up
to them and defeated them easily.
I returned to Rome while Marc Antony went
east to fight for Rome.
Marc Antony married my sister but later
divorced her to marry Cleopatra.
I saw the divorce as an insult.
Because of the insult, I attacked Marc
Antony, but he fled to Egypt to be with
Cleopatra.
Back in Egypt, the two of them commit
suicide so they would not be taken prisoner
by Octavian.
I lived from
69 to 30 BC.

Cleopatra
I was one of the most famous female rulers
in Egypt.
I gained power by marrying my brother who
inherited the throne from my father.
My brother wasn’t happy with sharing power,
so he and his advisors caused me to flee
Egypt.
I fled to Rome and fell in love with Julius
Caesar.
I stayed in Rome with Caesar until he was
murdered on the Ides of March.
Once back in Egypt, I took back power and
met a Roman leader named Marc Antony.
I then fell in love with Marc Antony, who left
his wife to be with me in Egypt.
Octavian wasn’t happy about Marc Antony
leaving his wife for me, so he convinced the
Senate to come and attack Egypt.
It is believed that
I killed myself
by allowing an
asp to bit me
while I lay in
my bed one night.
