Childhood • A Patrician, though not necessarily very rich – Patrician= Rome’s upper class, descended from the original 100 founders of Rome • Grew up in a time of civil strife – Rome divided up into those in support of the aristocracy and those in support of the people • Father died when Caesar was 16 Young Caesar Early Career • Joined the army and went to Asia • Came back to Rome upon Hearing of Sulla’s death • Known as a exceptional orator, prosecuted corrupt governors • Elected tribune, quaestor, then aedile – Tribune military official, quaestor treasury official, aedile a public maintenance officer Gaul • Entered into an unofficial triumvate around 60 BC – Triumvate= rule by three • Appointed governor of Gaul; conquered all of Gaul by 49 BC – Stayed a Roman province until 476 AD, the fall of the western Empire • Kicked out of First Triumvate because the others thought he desired to be king Roman Civil War • Term expired as consul – Senate, out of fear of his power, ordered him to disband his army Roman Soldier Pompey • Crossed the Rubicon with his legion • Beat Pompey in the battle of Pharsalus • Made himself a consul again The Assassination of Caesar • After helping Cleopatra conquer Egypt and putting down rebellions throughout the empire, Caesar returned to Rome • Many thought he was going to destroy the republic • Killed by Senators and Marcus Junius Brutus “Et Tu, Brute?” Aftermath Octavian, Later Augustus Caesar • Marc Antony and Octavian, Caesars nephew, beat the forces of Cassius and Brutus • Marc Antony goes to Egypt, Octavian stays in Rome • Tensions rise between the two, and they fight in the battle of Actium • Octavian wins, and later becomes Augustus Caesar, the first Emperor of Rome
