Chapter 6 Plate Tectonics Tectonic Plates Earth’s crust is broken into about 19 pieces These plates move on top of the asthenosphere. The thicker continental crust rises above ocean. The rest of the plate is thin oceanic crust, or sea floor 6.1 Layers of the Earth Earth is made up of materials with different densities CRUST MANTLE CORE Different properties of the Earth’s layers To explore the interior, scientists study the energy from earthquakes or underground explosions they set off. 1. Core, Mantle, Crust 2. Lithosphere and Asthenosphere The Core The Earth’s densest part. It is made up of two parts: 1- The inner core : a ball of hot, solid metals. 2- The outer core: a liquid metals layer surrounding the inner core. The Inner Core It is solid with high temperature and pressure. Metals are squeezed together and are not able to move. The Outer Core It is a very dense liquid made up of iron. It is just like a ball of very hot metals. The Mantle It is the thickest layer of the earth located below the crust. It has layers of cool, rigid rock at the top and a layer of hotter softer rock below it. The Crust An outer and thin layer of cool rock. It has two main types: - Oceanic (all the ocean floors) - Continental (all continents, and major islands) Oceanic and Continental Crust The crust is home for all life on earth. Earth’s Layers How do you think the earth and the egg are related to each other? Earth’s Layer Shell = crust Egg white = mantle Yolk = core Lithoshphere • In the Mantle litho means “stone” or “rock”. Asthenoshpere • asthenes means “weak”. • Earth’s crust and the very top of the mantle. • A layer of hotter softer rock in the upper mantle. • Is the most rigid of all layers. • Solid rock that flows slowly(hot asphalt). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXiVGEEPQ6c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAHY6965o08
