Vocabulary Chapter 1: Lesson 1 Organism Habitat Biotic factor Abiotic factor Species Population Community Ecosystem Ecology Organism Living things Examples: eagle, bacteria, flowers Habitat o An environment that provides the things a specific organism needs to live, grow, and reproduce Example: forest habitat, ocean habitat, prairies, Biotic Factor o Living or once living o Examples: Plants, worms, bacteria, animal scat, decomposing plant matter, owl pellets Abiotic Factor Not-living factors in a habitat Examples: Sunlight, soil, temperature, oxygen, and water Species oA group of organisms that mate with each other and produce offspring Examples: white-tailed deer Population All the members of one species living in the same area. Example: whitetailed deer living in Frosty Hollow. Community All the different populations living together in an area Example: white-tailed deer, bears, fish, and the rabbits living in Frosty Hollow. Ecosystem Living and nonliving parts of the environment living in the same area interacting. Examples: forests, prairies, ocean, deserts, ponds, puddle, crack in the sidewalk Ecology Study of how organisms interact with each other and their non-living environment.
