Transitive Verbs
A transitive verb is an action verb.
It requires a direct object to complete its meaning.
EXAMPLES:
Jim hit the ball towards the outfield.
SUBJECT
We read the newspaper each evening.
VERB
Roger eats breakfast every morning before school.
DIRECT OBJECT
Finding the direct object….
1. Find the action verb.
2. Ask WHO or WHAT after the verb.
3. The answer is the direct object.
*the direct object will always be a noun or
pronoun
Examples:
 My puppy ate my new shoes.
SUBJECT
 The knife’s sharp edge cut the chef.
VERB
 Susan answered the phone.
DIRECT OBJECT
Examples
All transitive verbs – have direct objects
The attorney revealed the bad news.
The defendant could not provide an alibi.
The jury deliberated the case for 48 minutes.
The judge sentenced the man to five years in prison.
Examples
• My family took a trip to Nevada and Arizona this spring.
• We hiked the Grand Canyon and the Red Rocks in
Sedona.
• In downtown Las Vegas, we rode the High Roller, which
is the world’s tallest observation point.
• We returned home after an awesome vacation.
Intransitive Verbs
An intransitive verb is an action verb, but it does
not have a direct object.
The action is modified by an adverb or adverb
phrase.
The files burned in the fire.
In the choir, she sang like an angel.
In the race, I ran quickly.
Intransitive Verbs
An intransitive verb answers the questions:
WHEN?
WHERE?
HOW?
Eliminate all prepositional phases.
Examples
All intransitive – no direct object
• Alice complained bitterly.
• When faced with the problem, the scholar paused.
• She worked with care and precision.
• The team raced around the track.
