Ball batter Transitive and Intransitive Verbs A verb that sends its action to a noun or a pronoun in the predicate is called a transitive verb. The noun or the pronoun that receives the action of the verb is called the direct object. A verb that does not send its action to a word in the predicate is called an intransitive verb. Transitive and Intransitive Verbs Many verbs can be either transitive or intransitive Transitive: The crowd cheered the batter. Intransitive: People cheered wildly. Ask your self whom or what after the verb. If there is no answer than the verb is intransitive. Transitive and Intransitive Verbs Linking verbs are always intransitive. They do not express action. The Monarchs are the winners. They seem happy about their victory. The team is in first place now.
