Living Bhakti Studies Presents MAJJA + ENDOCRINE SYSTEM SPECIAL REFERENCE OF THE THYROID Living Bhakti Mentorship Series : Session #7 With Maria E Garre MAJJA THE WHOLE BRAIN BONE MARROW SCLERA + SCLEROTIC FLUID ENDOCRINE SYSTEM CHAKRA SYSTEM ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Your endocrine system is a collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate your body’s growth, metabolism and sexual development. The hormones are released into the bloodstream and transported to the tissues and organs throughout your body. The endocrine glands secrete hormones internally, using the bloodstream. ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Your endocrine system is a collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate your body’s growth, metabolism and sexual development. The hormones are released into the bloodstream and transported to the tissues and organs throughout your body. HYPOTHALAMUS • Activates and controls the part of the nervous system that controls involuntary body functions, the hormonal system, and many body functions, such as regulating sleep and stimulating appetite. • is in control of the pituitary hormones by releasing: 1. thyrotropic releasing hormone 2. growth hormone releasing hormone 3. corticotrophin releasing hormone 4. gonadotropin releasing hormone • seat of prana vayu PITUITARY GLAND • referred to as the master gland controlling vital functions to overall well being • located in the bony hollow in the base of the skull underneath the brain and behind the bridge of the nose, it is also attached to the hypothalamus • it secretes hormones directly to the bloodstream under the command of the brain • growth hormone • prolactin • adrenocorticotropic • thyroid stimulating hormone • luteinizing hormone • follicle stimulating hormone • oxytocin • antidiuretic hormone • Vishnu Granthi in Ayurveda • Kapalabhati + Anuloma Viloma • Controls thyroid gland PINEAL GLAND • located behind the 3rd cerebral ventricle in the midline in the midline of the brain • related to Ajña Chakra • releases melatonin and serotonin a hormone derived from tryptophan • secretion of melatonin is increased by SNS stimulation • regulates circadian rhythm • functions as a light receptor • René Descartes labeled it as the seat of the soul • It has been thought to control the flow of memories into consciousness • Involved with daily biological cycles. • Shiva Granthi, the gland of innocence in Ayurveda • Meeting point between ida and pingala nadi • bridge between spiritual and material world • Sthapani, Adipathi, Ostha, Pada Kshipra Marma • releases soma (tarpaka kapha) induce tranquility • calcification creates loss of memory • Chikitsa for pineal gland includes: shirodhara (brahmi oil) + brahmi ghee nasya + shiro basti • Vacha, Yasti Madhu, Jyotismati, Brahmi, Shankapushpi • Brahmari Pranayama, So Hum THYMUS GLAND • Ojo Grunthi • secretes hormones that are referred to as humoral factors and are important during puberty replaced by avalambaka kapha in adult life • these hormones ensure we develop a healthy immune system • kapalabhati stimulates thymus gland PANCREAS • maintain healthy blood sugar • secretes insulin which regulates blood sugar • Secretes a hormone (insulin) that controls the use of glucose by the body. ADRENAL GLANDS • located on top of each kidney governs mineral metabolism, water electrolyte balance, carbohydrate/fat/protein metabolism, BMR, heart rate, blood pressure • Svadhisthana Chakra and water element, vrukka urdhva granthi • Udaka vaha srotas, Meda vaha srotas,m Rasa vaha srotas, • Helps to resist and react to stress • cortex produces cortisol which helps regulate metabolism and adapt to stress • medulla produces epinephrine and norepinephrine • epinephrine + norepinephrine biofeedback regulating blood pressure and heart rate. • Cushing’s Syndrome excess cortisol • Addison’s Disease decreased cortisol • castor, vidari and bala are similar to cortisone • anuloma viloma with sahita kumbhaka, ankusha mudra • yasthi maddhu, vidari, ashwagandha PARATHYROID GLAND • supports proper bone development • controls calcium and phosphorous levels in the body • located behind the thyroid gland THYROID GLAND • located in front of trachea, Jatru Grunthi • regulates metabolic activity and BMR, stimulates bhuta and dhatu agni, increases oxygen consumption at a cellular level, governs production of heat • T3 and T4 secretion • T3 and T4 regulate calcium metabolism by mobilizing calcium and other minerals from bones; stimulates bone growth • Ruled by Vishuddha Chakra therefore suppressed emotions and impaired communication leads to thyroid function disruption THYROID GLAND • Jatru Agni is the bridge between bhuta and dhatu agni • Functional integration to Jathara Agni • Brahmari, Utjayi, Utgeet help oxidative metabolic activity HYPOTHYROIDISM • Kapha based imbalanced characterized by low BMR, low HR, weight gain, manda agni, suppression and depression • low levels of thyroid hormone produced • may result from autoimmune disorder, poor iodine intake, damaged by drug intake HYPOTHYROIDISM • Chikitsa involves punaranava, kutki, chitrak, kanchanar guggulu (goiter only), kaishore guggulu, bhumi amalaki • Nasya to stimulate the pituitary release of TSH • bhastrika, kapalabhati, anuloma viloma, kurcha marma • camel, cobra, fish • jatru basti with sesame oil or flaxseed oil (goiter) THYROIDTOXICOSIS - HYPERTHYROIDISM • Pitta, Vata condition marked by increased heart rate, chronic malabsorption, tikshna agni, excess heat and restlessness, insomnia • too much thyroid hormone in the blood. Over activity of the thyroid gland (Grave’s Disease); inflammation of the thyroid, or benign tumor. THYROIDTOXICOSIS - HYPERTHYROIDISM • Chikitsa includes shatavari, gulvesattva, kamaduddha, moti bhashma, kaishore guggulu, sarpagandha, arjuna, kanchanar guggulu (goiter), atma gupta, tagara • brahmi ghee nasya • sheetali, sheetkari, jalandhara bandha • coconut oil shirodhara SIGNS & SYMPTOMS Hypothyroidism Weight gain Husky, hoarse voice Tiredness/lethargy Intolerance to cold Cold hands and feet Dry skin and hair, brittle nails Puffiness of the body Periorbital swelling Memory loss Constipation Bradycardia Muscle stiffness Impotence Anemia Depression Hyperthyroidism Weight loss Thinning of hair Sweating Nervousness Vomiting Tachycardia Diarrhea Tremor Muscle weakness and fatigue Insomnia Angina Increased appetite Eyelid pain Loss of libido Exophthalmos REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM/ GONADS Ovaries + Testicles: Secrete hormones that influence female and male characteristics, respectively.
