Align Research Award Program International, 2016 Overview The international Align Research Award Program for 2016 consists of eight $25,000 USD oneyear awards. Research proposal applications will be reviewed by an academic committee of orthodontists/scientists with backgrounds in either basic, clinical research or both (the “Committee”). Committee will include one international member. Recommendations and priorities for funding will be forwarded to Align for approval of funding. Align has the sole discretion whether to accept or reject any application forwarded for consideration by the Committee. Align may at its sole discretion accept an application and offer additional funding outside of this program or may deny an application and provide funding outside of this program. General Information 1. Funded research projects can be either clinical or basic science oriented, but justification must be provided that clearly shows how the research furthers the understanding of the field of dentistry. 2. The number of awards actually provided each year will vary depending on the quality of the applications submitted. 3. No funds to cover “indirect costs” such as cost of aligners will be provided by Align. By signing the Align Research Award Program terms and conditions you are confirming that your institution will accept the terms set forth herein. If at any time the applicant's institution will not accept this requirement, the application will be considered canceled and the award withdrawn. 4. No payment or commission of any kind will be paid for anyone who helps complete the application. If such is requested the application will be considered canceled and the award withdrawn. 5. If a two-year study is anticipated, the applicant should split the project proposal into two separate one-year studies and apply for the second one-year project in a subsequent program year once the first-year project has been completed and the objectives met. There is no guarantee that Align will offer the award program in a subsequent year or that the applicant’s proposal will receive funding for the second year. However, any first-year results will be taken into consideration when application priorities are assigned by Align’s independent academic review committee. 2016 Research Awards Page 1 of 3 6. All applications are submitted on a non-confidential basis and all content in such application is deemed non-confidential. Applicants may not submit confidential information in the application or at any time during this program without prior written approval from Align. If applicant is dealing with a new idea, concept, technology, invention or similar item the applicant should obtain appropriate intellectual property protection prior to submitting an application, since all information on the application is considered non-confidential. 7. A final report is required at the completion of the project. 8. All payments are made in U.S. dollars. 9. Publication of results in peer-reviewed orthodontic or appropriate journals of the project is encouraged. 10. Presentation of the results at a qualified regional, national or international scientific meeting is encouraged. 11. Awards may be used for human subject research (including without limitation, the use of any human tissue samples or the conduct of human clinical trials, provided that applicants have all approvals, assurances, certifications (including without limitation, IRB approvals) in accordance with their university’s policies prior to initiating such research. Application Guidelines 1. Applicants are encouraged to complete the application using the provided Word document application template. All final submissions should be converted to PDF format and an electronic copy sent via e-mail to: [email protected]. 2. Standard page layout must be used with standard margins of no less than 1 inch. Line spacing can be no less than single line spaced, and an easy-to-read font of at least 12 pt. should be used. 3. Applications to be considered for funding in 2016 must be received by 5:00 PST on April 1, 2015 Important Program Dates Application Submission Deadline: April 1, 2016 Award Recipients Notified: June 1, 2016 Funding Begins: no earlier than July 1, 2016 Format for Submissions 1. Read and sign the Program Terms and Conditions by applicant and university to ensure that the terms of the award are understood by all parties. 2. Complete the Application Form and convert it to PDF format. NOTE: THE APPLICATION TEMPLATE CAN BE COMPLETED AS A WORD DOCUMENT, BUT THE FINAL SUBMISSION MUST BE IN .PDF FORMAT. For Research Award Applicants Awards 2016 Research Awards Page 2 of 3 Applications are requested on general orthodontic treatment, with an emphasis on clear aligners. Research can be basic science or clinical. The maximum award is $25,000 USD per application. There are no additional funds for the support of aligners, but rather the awards amount can be used toward the costs of Invisalign treatment aligners. Research of the performance of third party corporation products in conjunction with basic research would not be considered by the committee. Eligibility Research awards are intended for individuals who are full- or part-time faculty and involved in orthodontic education and/or other scientific research. Students and/or residents may be included as co-investigators and/or research project staff, but the primary applicant must be a full- or part-time faculty member. For Scanner Research Award Applicants Awards Applications are requested in the areas of orthodontics and/or general dentistry. Research can be basic science or clinical. The maximum award is $5,000 per application, with a one-year loaner included, provided additional terms and conditions are executed between the parties for the loaner unit. Scanner award recipients also have the option to decline the one-year loaner and receive a $10,000 credit towards the purchase of an iTero™ scanner. Any scans associated with the research project are provided for one year at no charge. Any other scanner-related products or services used must be accounted for as part of the study budget or paid for separately. The purchase credit is non-transferable, has no cash value, and can only be redeemed by the university. Eligibility Scanner research awards are intended for individuals who are full- or part-time faculty and involved in dental education or research. Applicants must be located in countries where the iTero intraoral scanner is commercially available. Students and/or residents may be included as co-investigators and/or research project staff, but the primary applicant must be a full or part-time faculty member. 2016 Research Awards Page 3 of 3
