2016 Worldwide Scanner Research Award Program Overview
Overview
The Align Research Award Program in North America for 2016 consists of two components. For the
research award component, four $25,000 one-year awards will be available. For the intraoral scanner
award component, up to five $5,000 awards (plus a one-year scanner loan or a $10,000 credit towards
the purchase of a iTero scanner) will be available.
Research applications will be reviewed by an academic committee of orthodontists/scientists with
backgrounds in either basic, clinical research or both (the “Committee”). Committee will include one
international member. Recommendations and priorities for funding will be forwarded to Align for approval
of funding. Align has the sole discretion whether to accept or reject any application forwarded for
consideration by the Committee. Align may at its sole discretion accept an application and offer additional
funding outside of this program or may deny an application and provide funding outside of this program.
General Information
1. Funded research projects can be basic science or clinical, but justification must be provided that
clearly shows how the research furthers the understanding of the field of dentistry.
2. The number of awards actually provided each year will vary depending on the quality of the
applications received.
3. No funds to cover “indirect costs” such as cost of aligners will be provided by Align. By signing the
Align Research Award Program terms and Conditions you are confirming that your institution will
accept the terms set forth herein. If at any time the applicant's institution will not accept this
requirement, the application will be considered canceled and the award withdrawn.
4. No payment or commission of any kind will be paid for anyone who helps complete the application. If
such is requested, the application will be considered canceled and the award withdrawn.
5. If a two-year study is anticipated, the applicant should split the project proposal into two separate
one-year studies and apply for the second one-year project in a subsequent program year once the
first-year project has been completed and the objectives met. There is no guarantee that Align will
offer the award program in a subsequent year or that the applicant’s project will receive funding for
the second year. However, any first-year results will be taken into consideration when application
priorities are assigned by Align’s independent academic review committee. All applications are
submitted on a non-confidential basis and all content in such application is deemed non-confidential.
Applicants may not submit confidential information in the application or at any time during this
program without prior written approval from Align. If applicant is dealing with a new idea, concept,
technology, invention or similar item, the applicant should obtain appropriate intellectual property
protection prior to submitting their application, since all information on the application is considered
non-confidential.
6. A final report is required at the completion of the project.
