presents presents SPAT ON, REJECTED, BURNT, COVERED OVER AND STOLEN: portrait (of a nation) MARCH 11 - 22, 2015 LA MAMA COURTHOUSE the process February 4 - 15 La Mama Theatre Wirtten and performed by Eugene Gilfedder Directed by Andrew Blackman Projection Co-Ordinator: Andre Vanderwert After Effects and Animation:Robert Davine Imagery Assembly, Artwork and Sound: Eugene Gilfedder Filming by Todd Levi Costumes by Nic Gray Stage Management: Nick Moloney and Tess Foxworthy Images by Dorine Blaise Guqin music: Shen Juy Yin (Mao Minzhong, Southern Song Dymasty 1127-1279) and Zhuang Zhou Meng Die (Zhuang Zhou dreaming of a butterfly) Programme Note: The source for this script is three-pronged: extensive touring of Australia as an actor, reading histories both local and general and, finally, a chance visit to the heart of the continent, all too brief. History has always interested me but never as something removed. There is an argument to say we live the deeds of the past. A few histories I had read of this country were not afraid to speak of the darker sides. For myself, past events still rang with an emotional power and informed our time. This is perfect territory for the actor to enter: history no longer as removed facts but as a personal journey taken on and lived through. In essence, this is the experiment of this tale. I hope it can offer curious angles and reflections and add to the many works that have talked about identity in this place. Many thanks to Nic Gray, Todd Levi, Francis Gilfedder, Desmond Mc Cawley, Bill Shannon, Ken Jamieson, Hey Hey, my children Imogen and Finn and all at La Mama. A special thanks to Caroline and Andrew at Complete Works Theatre Company for their invaluable support. And thanks to Paul Jabore and Michael Futcher for patient dramaturgical advice. I would like to dedicate this production to my father John Gilfedder (1925-2015) Eugene Gilfedder – Writer and Performer Eugene has been involved with professional theatre and music performance since 1981. He will appear in Death and The Maiden for MTC in July. He was co-director for Fractal Theatre from 1989-2000, who produced more than twenty-five radical theatre events on an independent basis.
