Programme Note:
The source for this script is three-pronged: extensive touring of Australia as an actor,
reading histories both local and general and, finally, a chance visit to the heart of the
continent, all too brief.
History has always interested me but never as something removed. There is an argument
to say we live the deeds of the past. A few histories I had read of this country were not
afraid to speak of the darker sides. For myself, past events still rang with an emotional
power and informed our time.
This is perfect territory for the actor to enter: history no longer as removed facts but as
a personal journey taken on and lived through. In essence, this is the experiment of this
tale. I hope it can offer curious angles and reflections and add to the many works that
have talked about identity in this place.
Many thanks to Nic Gray, Todd Levi, Francis Gilfedder, Desmond Mc Cawley,
Bill Shannon, Ken Jamieson, Hey Hey, my children Imogen and Finn and all at La Mama.
A special thanks to Caroline and Andrew at Complete Works Theatre Company
for their invaluable support.
And thanks to Paul Jabore and Michael Futcher for patient dramaturgical advice.
I would like to dedicate this production to my father
John Gilfedder (1925-2015)
