Radnor High School Course Syllabus Created 5/2/2011 Latin 1 College Prep 0581 Credits: 1.0 Weighted: College prep Length: 1year Format: meets daily Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: grade level reading Overall Description of Course Prerequisite(s): Reading on Grade Level I. Course Description This course is intended to introduce the student to the structure and syntax of the Latin Language. The students study basic communication skills by using learner-centered instruction and collaboration. They learn an appreciation of language from the Classical period to the present. Students are expected to read and comprehend elementary Latin passages as well as learn Latin vocabulary and English derivatives. Students are also expected to do self-directed research in order to produce projects involving the domestic culture, history and mythology of the ancient Romans. Student Objectives: 1. Students will conjugate four conjugations of regular verbs and some basic irregular verbs in the indicative in the present tense. 2. Students will decline, recognize and properly translate nouns of first three declensions (nominative, genitive, accusative, ablative, and vocative cases) 3. Students will pronounce/speak Latin sentences with ease and inflection. 4. Students will have an awareness of the structure and syntax of the Latin language. 5. Students will be required to master an elementary Latin vocabulary. 6. Students will read and comprehend simple Latin sentences 7. Students will read and comprehend simple Latin stories with comprehension. 8. Students will translate simple Latin sentences and stories into proper English syntax. 9. Students will be able to ask and respond to simple Latin questions/statements germane to the readings. 10. Students will develop an incipient appreciation of the ancient world as part of our historic and linguistic tradition. Materials & Texts MATERIALS II.
