LATIN OUTLINE SYLLABI
YEAR 6 LATIN SYLLABUS
The work is based on ‘Practical Exercises Level 1, and begins the study of the language
in preparation for the Common Entrance Level 1 paper. The work covered includes:
Verbs: 1st 2nd 3rd & 4th conjugations. Present, Imperfect and Perfect tenses.
Irregular verb ‘esse’
Nouns: 1st & 2nd declensions. Using all six cases
Adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions and numbers.
Vocabulary, translation from both Latin into English and English into Latin.
Greek Mythology: Adventures of Odysseus, Perseus and the Gorgon, Theseus and the
Minotaur, the Labours of Hercules.
Roman History – The Foundations of Rome and its early history and the Kings of
Rome
YEAR 7 LATIN SYLLABUS
Based on Practical Exercises Level 2 the course revises all work covered for Common
Entrance Level 1 and prepares pupils for Common Entrance Level 2. The work in
Latin is highly differentiated and pupils who have not covered the syllabus for Level 1
(see Year 6 Latin Syllabus) continue to do so before moving on to Level 2. More able
pupils are moved onto the Level 3 and Scholarship work as soon as Level 2 is
completed. (See Year 8 for details) The additional work covered includes:
Future and Pluperfect tenses of all verbs.
3rd declension nouns.
3rd declension adjectives and comparison of adjectives (including irregular comparatives
and superlatives)
Personal and Demonstrative Pronouns.
Irregular verbs-sum, possum, volo, nolo, eo.
Further myths; Jason and the Golden Fleece, Roman Life
CE vocabulary.
Introduction to Common Entrance papers, translations, comprehension and grammar
work.
YEAR 8 LATIN SYLLABUS
The work is based on Practical Exercises Level 3 and continues preparation for Level 3
and Scholarship papers. Most pupils will still be completing the work for Level 2 (See
Year 7 Syllabus) and then spend time doing lots of practice Common Entrance Papers.
The additional work covered includes:
Recognition and use of the Passive Voice.
Irregular verbs; volo, nolo, fero
Expressions of time and place
Relative pronouns and relative clauses
Purpose Clauses
Indirect Commands
Past Participle Passive
Indirect Statements
Ablative Absolutes
Translating infinitives
Cum + subjunctive
Perfect deponent participles
Learning and revision of relevant grammar through out the year.
Practice on appropriate Common Entrance and Scholarship papers.
