Holy Texts
The Torah - The Torah is the first part of the Jewish bible. It is the central and most important document of Judaism and has been used by
Jews through the ages. Torah refers to the five books of Moses.
Jews believe that God dictated the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai 50
days after their exodus from Egyptian slavery. They believe that the
Torah shows how God wants Jews to live. It contains 613 commandments and Jews refer to the ten best known of these as the ten 10
statements.
The Torah is written in Hebrew, the oldest of Jewish languages. It is
also known as Torat Moshe, the Law of Moses.
The Talmud - The Talmud is the written version of the Jewish oral law
and commentaries on it. It originates from the 2nd century C.E. The
word Talmud is comes from the Hebrew verb to teach which can also
be expressed as the verb to learn.
The Talmud is the source from which the code of Jewish Halacha (law) is derived.
Important Terms
Yahweh - the Hebrew word for God, often considered too sacred to be spoken.
Diaspora - From the Greek word meaning "dispersion," the term often refers to the communities of
Jews living outside the region of Palestine/Israel.
Synagogue - The Jewish house of worship.
Rabbi - A Jewish scholar, teacher, or leader
Ten Commandments - the law God gave to Moses on the top of Mt. Sinai:
1. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; Do
not have any other gods before me.
2. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or
that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
3.You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.
4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
5. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your
God is giving you.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
10. You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or
