UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH WALES PRIFYSGOL DE CYMRU Marketing & Student Recruitment Publications Officer (Ref: MR172) Grade E, £27,318 - £31,644 per annum Fixed term contract for 12 months or until return of post holder External vacancy Our busy and dynamic Marketing & Student Recruitment department is looking for a Publications Officer, to cover a maternity vacancy. The role requires the individual to support the Brand & Campaigns Manager in the delivery of marketing promotional activity, as per the annual marketing plan and in line with the strategic objectives. Primarily this includes the production of the University’s prospectuses and key student recruitment publications. It is essential that applicants have excellent copywriting and editing skills, project management experience in particular for large scale literature such as a prospectus or brochures, and significant experience of working with designers and printers. In addition to the prospectus, the role involves supporting the Marketing Communications team and the department with copywriting and proof reading support, to deliver a range of publications and online copy. The individual should have good IT skills and knowledge of Microsoft packages. CLOSING DATE: Tuesday, 18th February 2014 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Publications Officer – MR172 Fixed term contract for 12 months or until return of the post holder GRADE & SALARY: Grade E, £27,318 - £31,644 per annum DEPARTMENT: Marketing & Student Recruitment Responsible to: Brand & Campaigns Manager Main Purpose of Job: To support the Brand & Campaigns Manager in the delivery of marketing promotional activity as per the annual marketing plan and in line with the strategic objectives, primarily this is the production of the University’s prospectuses and key student recruitment publications. To support the Marketing Communications team and wider Marketing & Student Recruitment (MSR) department with the implementation of all promotional materials in terms of copywriting and proof reading support. Principal Responsibilities and Duties: To produce prospectuses and other key publications which are ‘fit’ for the target market and support the University’s objectives Own the University house copy style, tone of voice documents and provide training to marketing staff requiring writing/ proofing support Progress, chase and ensure production and design standards are met for the prospectus and other key publications Play a support role (copywriting, editing and proofing) to the Marketing Communications team in the delivery of the marketing activity, as per marketing plans spanning: o Direct mail, brochures, advertising, on-line and email communications, campaign activities eg audio scripts etc Liaise on a day to day basis with designers and printers to progress key publication outputs Proof check and ensure compliance with approval procedures and corporate style guidelines for a range of marketing materials, from student recruitment activities to corporate publications eg. graduation brochures and annual reports To champion the University’s brand and to respond to general marketing enquiries, referring to colleagues as necessary With the Marketing Communications team, gather and share case studies and testimonials to enrich marketing copy Assist with the maintenance of the University’s Image Bank Provide quality assurance on all outputs Contribute to cross-departmental activity as required Adhere to all relevant Health & Safety legislation To adhere to the University’s financial regulations Work at weekends and out of hours as required Work at USW campuses as required To undertake other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the post and grade as directed by the Director of Department of their nominee PERSON SPECIFICATION SKILLS AND ABILITIES Essential a) Excellent copy writing and proof reading skills b) Ability to enhance and edit copy, with a consistent tone of voice c) To be able to translate descriptions and facts into consumer benefits d) Creativity in strapline and headline generation e) Highly organised with excellent attention to detail KNOWLEDGE Essential f) Awareness of general context and issues in HE g) Approval and quality control management h) Holds a degree in a relevant subject eg, English, media, journalism, publishing EXPERIENCE Essential i) Copywriting of large brochures / prospectuses j) Editing and proofing text k) Project management of large publications from concept through to completion l) At least two years experience of working as a Publications Officer or similar role m) Working with printers, agencies and designers to manage the production of materials TRAINING Essential p) Microsoft Word and Acrobat Professional OTHER REQUIREMENTS Essential r) Self starter who accepts problem ownership s) Team player, with a can-do attitude t) Occasional out of hours working during evening and at weekends, to meet deadlines and assist with Open Days Desirable Desirable Desirable n) Experience of working in a similar role in HE o) Writing for the web Desirable q) Adobe Photoshop Desirable u) Ability to write and proof copy in Welsh It is essential that when making an application, candidates specifically address the criteria set out in the Person Specification.
