POSITION DESCRIPTION –
COMMUNICATIONS/PUBLICATIONS OFFICER
1. ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT
The Australian College of Mental Health Nurses is the professional body for mental health
nurses across Australia. It is governed by a Board of Directors and has its national office in
Canberra.
2. ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Key Internal and External Relationships:
The ACMHN Communications/Publications Officer will report directly to the Chief Executive
Officer.
The Communications/Publications Officer will work closely with:


Chief Executive Officer
Other key management, administrative and project management staff.
3. PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The position of Communications/Publications Officer of the College will support the
communication and publication functions for the College, Chief Executive Officer, the ACMHN
Board and other key management, administrative and project management staff.
4. QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Essential:





Qualifications in Communications/Marketing
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to undertake some travel
Ability to work flexibly and in a small team
Ability to liaise with external suppliers and stakeholders
Desirable

Communication-specific applications such as InDesign, Joomla, Wix and MailChimp



Understanding of the nursing/mental health sector
Previous experience with a membership organisation
Previous experience in developing and implementing campaign strategies

6. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks to be undertaken in the position are largely sedentary and require frequent contact and
dealing with people.
7. POSITION REQUIREMENTS (Accountabilities, Responsibilities & Duties):
Functional / Operational:
Working in close collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer the
Communications/Publications Officer will be responsible for the following:
1. Develop communication strategies to promote the activities of the College
2. Produce publications including the quarterly news magazine, weekly eNewsletter,
monthly CEO Updates, other bi-monthly publications and any other required
publications
3. Develop and maintain the Colleges social media presence
4. Communication with members and stakeholders
5. Drafting, maintenance and upload of content onto website
6. Maintain effective relationships with relevant stakeholders to promote the College’s
activities
7. Production, draft and promotion of brochures, flyers, articles and other material for the
organisation, including upload and external release where appropriate.
8. Access opportunities and develop a media profile (including development of media
releases); media monitoring.
Skills and experience required:








High level of written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate
issues clearly and concisely and attention to detail.
Demonstrated experience in public affairs or communications work.
Ability to develop and implement communication strategies to promote the work of the
College.
Ability to prepare communication products including newsletters, magazines, brochures
and website content.
Ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
Ability to work co-operatively in a team environment and collaboratively.
Ability to liaise with external suppliers and contractors such as printers, graphic
designers and communication counterparts in other organisations in the sector.
Hold relevant qualifications and have experience in a similar role.
General Duties/Responsibilities:




Participate in quality improvement activities and provide a high level customer service to
internal and external stakeholders;
Comply with ACMHN policies and procedures;
Maintain strict confidentiality in relation to all workplace and ACMHN matters;
Use ACMHN resources efficiently, minimising cost and wastage, and ensure waste products
are disposed of in line with waste management guidelines.




Report any risk identified (e.g.: OHS, Clinical, Financial, Technology, Public Image) to the
CEO and participate in risk management activities;
Implement the principles of Multiculturalism in their work by ensuring services within their
area of responsibility are accessible and culturally appropriate to community;
Co-operate with other staff members to ensure that duty requirements and standards are
being met and maintained;
Perform all other delegated tasks appropriately and in line with grading and capabilities.
8. EMPLOYEE AGREEMENT
As the incumbent of this position, I have read and noted the requirements of this position
description and agree with the contents therein. I understand that other duties, consistent with
qualifications, skills and experience, may be directed from time to time and that the Position
Description will be reviewed on an annual basis.
