Homework – Atoms
Instructions:
You have been given a number between 1
and 20. Your number is the atomic number
of the element that you need to construct a
poster about.
Your poster should include the following:
The name of your element and its symbol;
The number of each subatomic particle (protons, electrons and neutrons);
A large atomic structure diagram showing one atom of your element (use the
rules below to help you to draw this);
The electron configuration for your element (see the example below).
Due: Thurs. 11th June (the whole lesson will depend on you having done your
homework!!
How to draw an atomic structure diagram...
An atom will only start filling the
next electron shell once the current
one has been filled.
Electron Configuration:
This is a shorthand method for showing the number of each electrons found on each shell
that is used by an atom.
E.g. An atom of calcium has 20 electrons in total. 2 of these are found on the first shell, 8 of
these are found on the second shell, 8 of these are found on the third shell, and the
remaining 2 are found on the fourth shell. The electron configuration for calcium is: 2.8.8.2
(each ‘shell’ is separated using a full stop).
