Atoms by Element
An atom’s atomic number is the number of protons in its nucleus. Usually an atom has the
same number of protons as electrons. The number of neutrons
can be different. The electrons form shells around the
nucleus of the atom. Each shell holds a specific number
of electrons. Use the diagram to guide you as you
place the correct number of protons, neutrons, and
electrons on each atom illustration.
1st shell - holds up to 2 electrons
2nd shell - holds up to 8 electrons
3rd shell - holds up to 18 electrons
