Study Guide for Ch. 1-3 – CPAdv CHEMISTRY Understand the following terms: o Compound o Physical property o Element o Chemical change o Homogeneous o Physical change mixture o Chemistry o Pure Substance o Matter o Heterogeneous o Volume mixture o Mass o Chemical property Be able to differentiate between the following: o Chemical and physical changes & properties o Homogeneous mixtures & heterogeneous mixtures o Intensive & Extensive properties o Qualitative & Quantitative Data o Accuracy & Precision Identify the benefits of the metric system versus classical measurement. Temperature scales and their details. Differentiate between solutions, colloids, and suspensions. Understand the physical properties involved in determining solids, liquids, & gases. Use significant figures in calculations and rounding of numbers. Convert numbers between scientific notation and standard form. Perform calculations to solve for the following: o Dimensional Analysis (metric, English, two tiered, etc.) – equalities will not be given for ANY conversions o Density (mass and volume from the density equation) – equation will not be given. o Basic Computations (+, - , x , division) using significant figures. Be able to classify samples of matter based on their properties. Be able to classify illustrations based on their chemical compositions using abstract representations. Be able to analyze data in terms of accuracy and precision. ALL OTHER MATERIALS COVERED DURING THE FIRST UNIT ARE ALSO ELLIGIBILE FOR TEST MATERIAL. THIS SHEET IS A GUIDELINE NOT A STRICT LIST OF TOPICS.
