AIM: To train or condition rats to perform various behaviors using conditioning
techniques of various psychologists.
KEEP THIS PAPER IN LOG; TEACHER CHECKS OFF FOR EACH STUDENT
Each student in group may be asked to perform skill with RAT, so everyone must be
involved; Sometimes the teacher may ask you to perform behavior more than once.
TRICKS: 50 POINTS TOTAL for this page
STAGE ONE – do at least 5 of these
a) Jump or walk out of cage when fingers snap or
when name called OR any jumping/walking to cage
b) Come when name is called (with food)
c) Walk and get food from food dish or person’s hand
d) Walk through a tunnel and/or toilet roll (at least
4 inches) on its own (no pushes through)
e) Stand on hind legs using food
f) Walk over a ruler (at least 10 inches) across two desks
STAGE TWO – do at least six of these
a) Stand on hind legs without food/can use fingers, but they
must be wiped clean
b) Jump from one position to another (not including cage)
c) Walk across 2/3 inch dowel for at least 10 inches
d) Create a staircase that is at least 6 inches high for rat to climb up
e) Rat walks on outside edge of cage for more than 12 inches
f) Walk across two rulers taped together (at least 20 inches)
g) Touch cotton ball or object on desk that is NOT food related
Must go to it on its own; no pushes or taps;
must be at least 6 inches away
STAGE THREE – do at least three of these
a) Stand on hind legs and take three to five separate steps
b) Walk/run through a wheel
c) Walk across ¼ inch dowel for more than 12 inches (more than one)
d) Come when name is called (no food; can use name/noise)
e) Long Jump – more than 10 inches
f) Rope Climb – at least five inches high

a) Come when name is called in full-class circle

c) Miscellaneous tricks – upon teacher’s approval
STAGE FOUR: THE OBSTACLE COURSE, 50 POINTS
You must “chain” to combine in sequential order six items from the other side; this must
be done WITHOUT FOOD and WITHOUT HANDS. You can use rat’s name or noise to
motivate. Rat must NOT miss a pre-planned step. You must explain course to teacher
first. After 2nd try, points are deducted.
