Study the map above of the Near East. How do you
think the geography of this region might explain the
origin of the flood story (Noah’s Ark)?

Anticipatory Set
Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the
earth was filled with violence. And God saw that
the earth was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted
its ways upon the earth. And God said to Noah, "I
have determined to make an end of all flesh, for
the earth is filled with violence because of them;
now I am going to destroy them along with the
earth. Make yourself an ark of cypress wood;
make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out
with pitch. Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a
cubit above; and set the door of the ark in its side;
make it with lower, second, and third decks. For
my part, I am going to bring a flood of waters on
the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in
which is the breath of life; everything that is on the
earth shall die. But I will establish my covenant
with you; and you shall come into the ark, you,
your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with
you. And of every living thing, of all flesh, you shall
bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them
alive with you; they shall be male and female.

At the same time, the flood sweeps over the cultcenters.
After, for seven days [and] seven nights,
The flood had swept over the land,
[And] the huge boat had been tossed about by the
windstorms on the great waters,
Utu came forth, who sheds light on heaven (and)
earth.
Ziusudra opened a window of the huge boat,
The hero Utu brought his rays into the giant boat.
Ziusudra, the king,
Prostrated himself before Utu,
The king kills an ox, slaughters a sheep.

Rites of Passage
• Brit Milah - Covenant of circumcision. The ritual circumcision of a male
Jewish child on the 8th day of his life or of a male convert to Judaism.
Frequently referred to as a bris.
• Bar or Bat Mitzvah - "Bar Mitzvah" literally means "son of the
commandment." "Bar" is "son" in Aramaic, which used to be the vernacular
of the Jewish people. "Mitzvah" is "commandment" in both Hebrew and
Aramaic. "Bat" is daughter in Hebrew and Aramaic. (The Ashkenazic
pronunciation is "bas"). Technically, the term refers to the child who is coming
of age, and it is strictly correct to refer to someone as "becoming a bar (or
bat) mitzvah." However, the term is more commonly used to refer to the
coming of age ceremony itself, and you are more likely to hear that someone
is "having a bar mitzvah" or "invited to a bar mitzvah."

the wandering in the desert and the final harvest. Also known as the Feast of Tabernacles or
