Pharmacogenetics A Topic Overview Shannon Staton PharmD 2016 Video Overview O Pharmacogenetic Video O Stop at 2:13 Definitions O Pharmacogenetics – the study of how people respond differently to medicines due to their genetic inheritance O Pharmacology + Genetics O The study of how drugs work in the body O The study of how traits are inherited O Pharmacogenomics – the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs Goal O To be able to predict (from a patient’s genetic make-up) how well a medicine will work in his/her body, as well as, to predict the likelihood of side effects O Leads to the practice of “personalized medicine” O Enough of the right medicine, to the right person Controversy O Exists with genetic profiling O Profiling of patients raises issues about confidentiality and ownership of information O Examples: O Is telling a patient they are susceptible to cancer for life helpful? Can we prevent the cancer? O Is telling a patient they carry a gene for Alzheimer’s disease later in life detrimental to their well-being? Example: STATINS O STATINS (moderate or high intensity therapy) are used for: O Patients with cardiovascular disease O Patients with LDL or “bad” cholesterol O Patients with Type 2 diabetes; between ages 40 to 75 years of age O Patients with an estimated 10-year risk of CVD of 7.5% or higher, between ages 40-75 years of age Use O If any of those genes used for pharmacologic pathways in statin therapy (previous slide) have an SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) this will effect the way the drug affect’s the body, thus effecting the RESPONSE of statin in lowering LDL and preventing CVD O A choice of a different statin or another class entirely may be considered O Innovative firm providing affordable genetic testing without health insurance hurdles O Simple mouth swab test provided at pharmacies O Pharmacogenetic testing firm providing genetic testing for: O Statins O Antiplatelets O ADHD O Pain Questions/Discussion?
