Chemical Interactions Chapter 1 Test A Study Guide Mr. Ginder Noble gases are not likely to react with any other element. A metalloid is an element that has properties of both metals and non-metals. Metals are easy to shape by drawing into long thin wire and have a shiny surface. Halogens are elements often used to kill bacteria. Transition metals like Gold are toward the middle of the periodic table. The most common element in the universe is hydrogen. Atoms of an element always have a certain number of protons. Isotopes of an element differ in the number of neutrons. When an atom loses one or more electrons in becomes an ion with a + charge. The atomic mass number is the total number of protons & neutrons. Non metals have a dull surface and do not conduct electricity or heat well. Alkali metals are in Group 1 at the far left of the periodic table. One row of the Periodic table is a Period. One Column of the table is a Group. The 3 major areas of the table are Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids. The table is in order of atomic number as you move across then down the number increases by 1. Group 1 and Group 17 are the columns with the most reactive elements. Group 18 the noble gases are the least reactive. Protons and neutrons make up the nucleus . The nucleus is surrounded by a cloud of electrons. Not all elements have been discovered where there is a gap on the periodic chart (mostly above 119) there may be an element, but where the atomic numbers are one after the other with none skipped there can be no new elements since they can not have a part of a proton. (IE there is no element 3.5 etc.). A neutral atom and its ion are alike in that they both have the same number of protons and neutrons in their nucleus. A neutral atom and its ion are different in that they both have a different number of electrons and there for do not have a neutral charge. (it may be + or – depending on if electrons were lost or gained)
