Year 7 Forces HW 3 - Magnetic Forces
Name: _____________________________
A Magnet is a special metal that can attract other
magnetic metals – they are iron, nickel, cobalt and steel.
Most other metals, like aluminium, copper or gold, are not
magnetic. Magnet can be made as permanent magnets or
temporary magnets. Magnets come with different shapes.
Q1. Which are the 3 magnetic metals?
________________________, ________________________, and
________________________.
Q2. Give 4 shapes of magnets.
________________________, ________________________, and
________________________, ________________________,
Q3. Give 3 examples of non-magnetic metals.
________________________, ________________________, and _________________________.
A magnet (even with different shape) always consists of 2 poles (ends) – North and South pole. If
you are looking inside a magnetic, there are in fact millions of micro-magnets or called DOMAINS.
Q4. What do you call those tiny units inside a magnet? ______________________________
Q5. How do these tiny units arrange in a magnetised metal?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________If
you place a magnetic under a piece of paper and then dust iron filings on the paper, you can see
the magnetic field of a magnet.
Q6. Magnetic field is strongest at their _______________, weaker in the middle.
Q7. Magnetic field goes from the _________________ to the ___________________ pole.
A magnetic field is a region around the magnet where magnetic materials experience a force.
Magnetic force is known as a NON-CONTACT force and the magnetic force can act on others
without contact. The Law of Magnetism states that Like poles attract and opposite poles repel.
Q8. Is magnetic force a contact force or a non-contact force? Give 2 other non-contact forces.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Q9. Which of the following will attract and which will repel ?
Q10.A metal A and a metal B are placed close together, if they attract each other what may be the
conclusion of metal A and B? Circle the CORRECT ANSWERS.
A. Both metals are magnets with opposite poles facing each other.
B. Both metals are magnets with same poles facing each other.
C. Metal A is a magnet but Metal B is a non-magnetic metal.
D. Metal A is a magnet but Metal B is a magnetic metal.
Magnetic metals can be made to become temporary magnets by 2 methods:
(1) Stroking the metal pin or nail with a permanent magnet in one directions 20-30 times.
(2) Passing electricity to a coil of wire around the nail for a short time.
The magnetism of the temporary magnets can be destroyed easily by dropping it many times and
heating it.
Q11 What is actually happening inside the nail when you are magnetising it? Think “DOMAINS”

Q12. Give 5 uses of magnets in our daily life?
