PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE IN GERONTOLOGY (Sponsored by the Gerontology Program Council) The Program Currently, there are more than 30 million Americans age 65 plus; individuals over 85 comprise the fastest growing age segment in the U.S. As our society ages, individuals in the public and private sectors must equip themselves to meet the needs and wants of this growing population. The Gerontology Certificate Program is designed for: • Professionals already working with, or on behalf of, the elderly who want to upgrade their qualifications or update their skills. • Practitioners in all disciplines who are seeking specialized skills and knowledge to better serve their clients, patients, or customers who are older adults. • Individuals who are interested in pursuing careers in areas which serve the aging. The program provides the opportunity for persons to accomplish in two years or less, a specialization in the field of aging. It offers a professional certificate from California State University, Fullerton, along with 18 units of post-baccalaureate credit of which up to six units may be applied to selected graduate programs. Cal State Fullerton is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (Provider Number 00061) for indicated contact hours. Specified courses are approved for RCFE continuing education credits (Provider Number 100082). Eligibility Applicants: • Should have a baccalaureate degree in an approved undergraduate major from an approved institution, or • Should be within nine units of completing a baccalaureate degree. • Should apply for admission to the program prior to completing nine units of required course work. Individuals with 60 units and work experience providing services for older adults will be considered. An undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 is required for admission to the Certificate Program. The Certificate Program must be completed with a 3.0 grade point average or better. No more than three units of approved transfer of course work is permitted. The Courses (18 Total Units) Required Courses (5 UNITS) Physiological Aspects of Aging NURS X404 (1UNIT) Prerequisite: BIOL 101 or equivalent or consent of instructor. Normal versus abnormal changes in aging and the body's ability to adapt. Each body system will be reviewed, focusing on both health and the disease process. (15 BRN contact hrs.) Lecture: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays, February 8 & 22, 2 meetings; CSUF, Ruby Gerontology Center Instructor: Elaine Davis, M.S., nurse instructor Schedule: 15974G Fee: $130 Psychological Aspects of Aging PSYC X405 (3 UNITS) Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Exploration of current research findings in the psychology of aging to increase the knowledge of the professional working with older adults concerning such topics as cognitive functions, personality, sexuality, psychotherapies and loss. (15 BRN and RCFE contact hrs.) To be offered in Fall 1997. Social/Cultural Aspects of Aging SOCI X405 (3UNITS) Prerequisite: Consent of Instructor. Course explores social and cultural influences on aging. Topics: minorities in relation to healthcare, family, death, poverty, work/retirement, social problems/policies/programs. Other topics: aging and homosexuality, homeless seniors, disabled seniors, gender differences in aging. (45 BRN and 40 RCFE contact hrs.) To be offered in Summer 1997. Elective Courses (Select 13 Units) Working with the Community Frail Elderly HUSR X440 (1 UNIT) Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. This course is designed to sensitize students to the needs of the frail elderly, the most vulnerable portion of the elderly population. Students will learn to assess the physical, psychological and social factors which contribute to the maintenance of the frail elderly in the community. Supportive services that exist to serve this special poopulation, and gaps in these services, will be examined. (15 BRN contact hrs.) Lecture: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays, March 1 & 15, 2 meetings; CSUF, Ruby Gerontology Center Instructor: Claudia Ellano, M.S.W., director, Orange Caregivers Resource Center Schedule: 15975G Fee: $130 Organization and Management of Aging Services GERO X490 (1UNIT) Prerequisite: NURS X404 or PSYC X405 or consent of instructor. Review of theories of organization and management of programs and services for older people. Course also will cover principles for planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating home care, community programs and institutional services. (BRN contact hrs.) To be offered in Summer 1997. Hospice in Action SOCI X490 (1UNIT) Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. The role of hospice as an alternative to and enhancer of traditional care in furnishing physical, emotional and spiritual support for the dying patient and significant others. Includes history of the hospice movement, interdisciplinary team approach, bereavement follow-up and implications for the future. (15 BRN contact hrs.)
