AP Biology Topic 1 and 2 Test Preparation Assignment. Research and answer the following questions. You will be required to answer one of these questions (randomly drawn on the test date) on the upcoming test. You will not be allowed to use prewritten answers or any notes you make on the essays on the day of the test. 1. The element carbon is contained in all organic compounds. (a) Discuss the role of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in carbon cycling in the biosphere. (2 points max) (b) For THREE of the following, predict and explain the effect on the carbon cycle if: (6 max) decomposers were absent deforestation occurred volcanic dust accumulated in the atmosphere the average ocean temperature increased (c) Explain how increased CO2 in the atmosphere results in greater acidification of oceans and describe the effect on marine organisms. Include in your discussion TWO examples of how human activity can increase atmospheric CO2. (4 points maximum) 2. Water is essential to all living things. (a) Discuss THREE properties of water. (6 points max) (b) Explain each of the following in terms of the properties of water. You are not limited to the three properties discussed in part (a): (6 points max) • the role of water as a medium for the metabolic processes of cells • the ability of water to moderate temperature within living organisms and in organisms’ environments • the movement of water from the roots to the leaves of plants 3. The Physical structure of a protein often reflects and affects its function. a. Describe three types of chemical bonds/intereactions found in proteins. For each type describe its role in determining protein structure. b. Discuss how the structure of a protein affects the function of two of the following: i. Muscle contraction ii. Regulation of enzyme activity iii. Cell signaling c. Abnormal hemoglobin is the identifying characteristic of sickele cell anemia. Explain the genetic basis of the abnormal hemoglobin. Explain why the sickle cell allele is selelcted for in certain areas of the world. 4. All life on Earth is carbon based. Our carbon basis allows for the formation of complex molecules. Pick three of the four groups of complex carbon based molecules (macromolecules) and for each; discuss the sructureal componenets of the molecule group, discuss tow examples of molecules that belong to each of the groups that you chose and briefly describe therir function and finally, explain the procsee that joins these molecule together. This note is for the teachers. Note: Question 1 is from 2012 (#4) and Question 2 is from 2009 Form B (#3)
