Learning Targets: Evidence for Evolution Unit 1. I can develop a discussion/explain Natural Selection using the following terms/phrases: *population *struggle for existence *variation *mutation *mates *competition *resources *environment *phenotypic advantage * offspring * produce more offspring than environment can sustain * favorable phenotype dominates population 2. I can give several examples of how the phenotype of an organism can give it a selective advantage in obtaining the limited resource(s) by using animals or plants around me. 3. I can list some limiting factors/resources that would lead to competition among species. 4. I can explain why species in very distant places sometimes share similar traits. 5. I can explain the evidence for evolution: Vestigial, Homologous structure, and Embryology (comparing anatomy); the Fossil Record; Genetic evidence; Biogeography. 6. I can explain how fossils form. 7. I can list and describe the types of reproductive isolation that leads to the formation of new species. Give examples of each. 8. I can explain how the mechanism of genetic drift can lead to random changes in allelic frequency. Describe possible scenarios of genetic drift. 9. I can list the five conditions that can disrupt genetic equilibrium and cause evolution to occur. 10. I can create a phylogenetic tree based on derived (shared) traits. 11. I can explain how all living things are related and fit into the three domains of life (Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya) 12. I can explain the evolutionary history of modern day humans. 13. Which traits distinguish humans from primates? When and where did these traits evolve? What fossil record reveals the history of our evolutionary origins? 14. I can explain how processes like the rock cycle, plate tectonics, and erosion reveal the fossil record.
