Tenses WHAT IS TENSE ? Ans - Tense is a form of verb that indicates time. Tenses are divided in to Three Parts. Those are, Tense Present Tense Past Tense Future time Present Tense Present Tense has four aspects .The aspects are, Present Tense Present Simple Present Progressive Present Perfect Present Perfect Progressive Structure (About the all aspects) 1. Present Simple S + M.V. (root) +Obj Ex- Subject +Main Verb (root) +Object We go to School every day. I am hungry. 2. Present Progressive S+Be V.(am/is/are) + M.v.(-ing) form + Obj Ex- I am eating. The boy is going to School. We are Playing. 3. Present Perfect S+ Have/Has+ M.v (P.P) form + Obj Ex- He has gone to cuttack I have taken my lunch. 4. Present Perfect Progressive S+ Have/Has + been+ M.V(-ing) + Obj Ex- It has been raining since morning. I have been living in the house since 2000.AD PAST TENSE Past Tense has four aspects. The aspects are, PAST TENSE Past Simple Past Progressive Past Perfect Past Perfect Progressive Structure- (About the all aspects) 1. Past simple S + M.V (Past) + O Ex- He want to home. I saw a beautiful girl. 2. Past Progressive S+ was /were + M.v.(ing) + O Ex- He was playing in the field. We were reading the english book Past Perfect /Plu-Perfect S+ had + M.v (p.p) + O Ex- He refused to go until he had seen his mother. Before I had known him for week, he asked for money. Past perfect is used with the verbs in the sentence before the action that is performed earlier one action in the past time. Such as, The train had gone away before I reached the station so on. It is also named “Plu-Perfect” in english. FUTURE TIME According to grammarians there is no future tense in English, Only future time is there. There is no uses of “I shall” , “I will” & “We will”, ‘We shall” in future time. Ex- The girl is to dance tomorrow. I shall be ready in about half an hour. GROUP-A PRESENT TENSE Fill in blanks with present simple 1. I brush my teeth every day. (brush) 2. Devi does not eat meat at all. (not eat) 3. Trees grow will in the rainy season. (grow) 4. It almost does not rain in winter. (not rain) 5. Sound travels slower than light. (travel) 6. What have you to do at school. (do) GROUP-B Fill in the blanks with present progressive. 1. Look ! an aero plane is flying overhead ?(fly) 2. My father is writing a letter now. write) 3. At present, Smruti is working in a shop. work) 4. The population is increasing everyday. (increase) 5. You are always finding faults with me. always find) 6. He is always suffering from cold. (always suffer) GROUP-C Make Sentences in the present perfect using the words given. 1. ever/you/drive/car ? Ans-Have you ever driven car ? 2. recently/he/leave/this place. Ans-He has left this place recently. ? 3. never/we/see/ghost/in life. Ans-We have never seen ghost in life ? 4. Yet/leave/for home/sirish. GROUP-D Use the present perfect progressive tense. 1. Girish to sirish: You are out of breath, Sirish? Ans- I have been swimming for two hours. Swim two hours) 2. How long has been raining ? Ans- It has been raining for three days. (for three days) 3. How long have you been waiting here ? Ans- We have been waiting here since ten o’ clock. (since, ten o’ clock) 4. How long have you been playing cricket. Ans- We have been playing cricket for two hours. 5. How long has Manish been driving a car. GROUP-E PAST TENSE Fill in blanks with the negative form of the verbs in the past simple. 1. I asked for help, but she did not help me. 2. Suresh saw me but he did not say anything. 3. The doctor gave me some medicines, but I did not take them. 4. I went to you office, but I did not find you there. 5. I ate my breakfast, but I did not eat my lunch. GROUP-F Complete the sentences using the past perfect tense. 1. Last week Harish didn’t come to school be cause. Ans-He had been sicked. (be/sick) 2. I was late. Ans- My vehicle had broken down. (break down) 3. We got up at 2 a.m. Ans- We saw that some people had enter our garden. 5. We reached the airport late. Ans-Before we reached there the plane had took off.
