Gene Expression
Virus: Viruses are nonliving organisms composed of a protein coat
(phage), with the genetic material being stored inside as either DNA
or mRNA and reverse transcriptase that creates DNA from mRNA.
Viruses require a host cell to survive and reproduce.
Lytic Cycle: the lytic cycle occurs when the bacteriophage injects its
genetic material into the host cell, and directs the cell to assemble
new phages using the host cell’s machinery.
Lysogenic cycle: In the lysogenic cycle, the phage injects its genetic
information into the host cell, integrating it with the host’s genome.
The effects become very hard to treat, because the viral DNA is now
replicating with the host DNA, meaning that new daughter cells contain viral DNA.

Polymerase Chain Reaction: PCR is a method used by forensic
scientists to amplify a DNA sample for testing.

Restriction enzymes: cuts DNA at certain segments, can be used to
clone genes in plasmids.

Gel Electrophoresis: a method used to separate DNA strands by size by
running an electrical current through gel. Smaller samples are found
towards the cathode terminal (+).

Cloning: Re-creating a host organism by taking an egg and a somatic
cell and fusing them together.
We performed the restriction enzyme lab, and this allowed us to use restriction enzymes and electrophoresis.
Bioinformatics: Using computers and other electronic/automated means to store biological
information.
Genomics: The study of genomes and their interactions.
Big Idea 1: The Process of diversity and evolution drives life: Mutations in DNA replication.
Big Idea 2: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce and to maintain dynamic homeostasis: When viruses infect the cells, the cells must
protect themselves.
Big Idea 3: 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit and respond to information essential to life
processes: Lytic/Lysogenic cycle shows how viruses use host cells to transmit their DNA into the
host cell genome or produce new viruses.
Big Idea 4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex
properties: Protein synthesis is one example of retrieving stored information, this demonstrates
the complex interactions between the systems in the body.
