Cell Organelle Similes
There have been many cell parts, or organelles, introduced to you. It is important that you display your
understanding of the functions of these cell parts. To demonstrate that you know the true function of each
cell part, you will combine what you have learned in science about cell parts with a figurative writing
technique you learned in English…similes.
A simile is a figure of speech in which things different in kind or quality are compared by using the word
like or as.
Simile: The nucleus is like a brain in humans because it directs all the activities of the cell.
You will create a project that fully describes an object or concept as compared to an organelle of a cell. You
will write similes comparing your topic's parts with the parts of the cell. Remember to make your work:
 Insightful
 Rich with detail  Accurate
 Vivid
How to begin:
1. First, familiarize yourself with the cell parts below:
nucleus
cytoplasm
chloroplasts
cell membrane
mitochondria
cell wall
vacuole
endoplasmic reticulum
golgi complex
lysosome
2. Second, you need to think of what the cell could be like, and which organelle you want to focus on.
This should be something you know about or could research. For example, a cell is like a car, airplane,
school, or human body. All of these things mentioned have parts to them.
3. Next, your challenge is to write a simile for the organelle you have focused on, plus other parts of the
cell that fit with your presentation.
Next…create the project.
1. A project using any form of media. Examples of media that you can use are music, drama, poetry,
photography, sculpture, collage, video, etc. You are not limited to making a poster. Stretch yourself! The
project should describe the topic chosen as the "cell" and similes comparing your topic's parts with the
required cell parts. You must include the “because” as modeled in the example above in your simile to
demonstrate understanding of the cell part’s function.
2. An additional set of your similes (including the "because") on a separate sheet of paper. You can present
or not as you choose, but you should submit a written outline of your presentation as homework if you do
not wish to present. If you choose to present before the class, either with a group or on your own, you do
not need to present an outline of your presentation.
