Grade 8 Science Unit Four Title Suggested Time Frame Matter and Energy: ➢ Atoms Big Ideas/Enduring Understandings ● Matter is composed of atoms ● Atoms are made up of 3 subatomic particles; protons, neutrons, and electrons. ● The history of atomic development shaped the way scientists have constructed the current model of the atom. 1st Six Weeks 9 Days ●

Guiding Questions Who were the scientists that developed atomic theory? What are the parts of an atom and their functions? How do you determine the mass of an atom of an element? How do protons determine an element's identity? How do valence electrons determine an element’s chemical properties and reactivity? Does an atom have an electrical charge? Vertical Alignment Expectations *TEKS one level below* 7.6A identify that organic compounds contain carbon and other elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur *TEKS one level above* IPC.6D relate the physical and chemical behavior of an element, including bonding and classification, to its placement on the periodic table Sample Assessment Question Updated May 2016 The resources included here provide teaching examples and/or meaningful learning experiences to address the District Curriculum. In order to address the TEKS to the proper depth and complexity, teachers are encouraged to use resources to the degree that they are congruent with the TEKS and researchbased best practices. Teaching using only the suggested resources does not guarantee student mastery of all standards. Teachers must use professional judgment to select among these and/or other resources to teach the district curriculum. Some resources are protected by copyright. A username and password is required to view the copyrighted material. Ongoing TEKS 8.1AB, 8.2AE, 8.AC, 8.4AB Knowledge and Skills with Student Expectations District Specificity/ Examples Vocabulary Suggested Resources Resources listed and categorized to indicate suggested uses. Any additional resources must be aligned with the TEKS. Subtopic: Atoms 8.5 Matter and energy. The student knows that matter is composed of atoms and has chemical and physical properties. The student is expected to: (A) describe the structure of atoms, including the masses, electrical charges, and locations, of protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons in the electron cloud *Readiness Standard *Bloom’s Level Understanding (B) identify that protons determine an element's identity and The student will be able to describe the structure of an atom and explain identify the role of protons and valence electrons in determining the atom’s chemical properties. Questions and Stems: ● What are subatomic particles, what are their charges, and where are they found? ● What is the nuclear model of the atom? ● What is the mass of an atom and how is that determined? ● How do atoms define (or determine) elements? ● How do protons determine an element’s identity? ● How do valence electrons determine an element’s chemical properties?
