ANTHROPOLOGY
AT M A C O M B
Combine Curiosity and Attention to Detail With a Taste for
Adventure! Anthropologists and archaeologists are explorers of
human culture. Their work is closely connected. Both careers
focus on the way people live together. Anthropologists study
the origin of humans and their physical, cultural and social
development. They are concerned with how the past relates to
the present. They also conduct research by going to locations to
ask questions and make observations.
creating a picture of a society
Anthropology is the most humanistic of the sciences
and the most scientific of the humanities.
—Alfred L. Kroeber
I used to say to my (anthropology) classes that the
ways to get insight are to study infants, to study
animals, to study primitive people … or to have
a love affair with an old Russian. And I stopped
saying that when a little dancer in the front row put
up her hand and said, “Does he have to be old?”
—Margaret Mead
We often think of anthropology in terms of the past, unearthing
the secrets of ancient civilizations. But these scientists also
examine living societies, in faraway Amazon jungles or in a
neighborhood next door. They might study gender differences,
physical attributes, music or religion. Their field is the wide array
of human social experience.
MACOMB COMMUNITY COLLEGE OFFERS
THE FOLLOWING INTRODUCTORY
COURSES
ANTH-1000 — Introduction to Anthropology An introduction
to man’s biological evolution and cultural origins. Prehistoric
man, racial differences, and the growth of language and culture
will be considered. A cross-cultural study of social institutions,
art, beliefs, and values will be included as well as a discussion
of contemporary anthropological problems. (4 contact hours)
ANTH-2914 — Introduction to Forensic Anthropology This
course is an introduction to the field of forensic anthropology.
Using a lecture and laboratory format, the course will instruct
the student in correct examination of the human skeleton and its
biological features. Such aspects will include: osteology, building
a biological profile, and the use of complementary disciplines
within forensic anthropology. (4 contact hours)
FURTHER EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Most anthropologists prepare for their careers with a four-year
college program followed by extensive graduate-level study. For
many professional positions, especially with universities, a Ph.D.
