Adaptation
A structure or behavior that helps an
organism survive in it surroundings
Producer
An organism that makes its own food
Photosynthesis
The process of using the energy in
sunlight to make food from water and
carbon dioxide
Consumer
An organism that gets energy by
eating other organisms
Herbivores eat plants.
Carnivores eat other animals.
Omnivores eat plants and
animals.
Decomposer
An organism that gets energy by
feeding on the remains or wastes of
other organisms
Food Chain
The path of food energy from one
organism to another in an ecosystem
Food Web
Overlapping food chains with different
pathways for the flow of food energy in
an ecosystem
Biome
A very large area of land with a certain
kind of climate and certain kinds of
organisms living there.
Ecosystem
A community and its nonliving
environment (soil, climate, water, air,
energy, and nutrients)
Environment
Surroundings and conditions in which
an organism lives.
Niche
The role each population has in its
habitat.
Chlorophyll
Green substance in plant leaves that
captures the energy in sunlight.
Thrive
To grow strong and healthy
Perish
Die
Reproduce
The process of making more organisms
of the same kind
Species
A group of organisms of the same kind
that can mate and produce offspring
like themselves
Habitat
The environment where an organism
lives
Pollution
Anything in the environment that can
harm living things or damage natural
resources
Predator
An animal that hunts, catches, and eats
another animal
Prey
An animal that is hunted, caught, and
eaten by another animal
Carbon Dioxide-Oxygen Cycle
The movement of carbon dioxide and
oxygen between organisms and the air

oxygen and breathing out waste gases

Survive
Live
Organism
A living thing
Hibernation
A deep sleeplike state when an animal’s
body processes slow
