Notes on predicting the probability of a single trait Aim page
• Punnet squares: (used to predict the probability of trait in the offspring.) They represent a cross for a particular trait. • On one side write the genotype from one parent and on the other from the other one (it does not matter which side is which). • Each trait is represented by two letters corresponding to two genes in the homologous chromosomes.
• Capital letters represent dominant genes and lower case recessive genes.
• If the letters are the same the organism is homozygous or pure for the trait.
Aim page
• If one letter is capital and the other is lower case the organism is heterozygous or hybrid.

Look at this chart on page 317. Shows independent
assortment
Mendel observed a combination of traits in the offspring that was not present in either parent or grandparent.
He concluded that the alleles that code for the shape and color of the seeds not only segregated, but were independent from other . He called this the law of independent assortment. summary Review the 3 laws.

Traits are determined by Factors (genes) that are passed from parents to offspring in their sex cells. Some traits are dominant other are recessive ( F1) from Pure or homozygous cross • Most traits are controlled by 2 genes one from each parent. They segregate and recombine as gametes form (egg and sperm) form. (F2)
• Law of independent assortment. • The genes for different traits usually segregate independently of one another. (demonstrated with dihybrid crosses) Jan 89:01 AM

Vocabulary:
1. Probability: Calculation of the likelihood that a particular event will occur; expressed as a fraction or percentage. 2. Homozygous: An organism that has two copies of the same gene (same alleles) for a trait.
3. Heterozygous: An organism that has two different alleles for a trait.
