Name: Period: Date: 1. Describe reasons why cells divide. 2. Identify the timing of the cell cycle. Look at G1,s and G2 in addition to the whole cell cycle. You may want to draw a picture. 3. Explain how cytokinesis differs between plant cells and animal cells. 4. Draw and label the events that occur at each stage of the cell cycle (one picture per stage). 5. What is the difference between the cell cycle and mitosis? 6. What events take place during interphase? How long is interphase? 7. Define haploid and diploid. Provide an example for each type of cell. 8. Draw a picture that shows the different checkpoints in the cell cycle. 9. Describe the role of the following gene families on making sure the cell cycle runs smoothly. a. Proto-oncogenes: b. Tumor suppressor genes: c. DNA repair genes: 10. Thoroughly describe how mitosis differs from meiosis. 11. Define the difference between sex chromosome and autosomes (go over in class). 12. We all have about 25,000 genes in our cells. In addition to that, our cell are quite complicated and large. These factors together make our cell cycle about 18-25 (22 on average) hours long. Bacteria cells are far simpler. They contain about a 1,000 genes and their cell size is quite small, about 1/10th the size of our cells. Their cell cycle is about 30 minutes long! Protists are a bit bigger than bacteria and unlike bacteria, they have a nucleus. They also have far more genes (Not sure on the number). Their cell cycle in about 5 hours long. In the space below, draw the total number of each type of cell you would find after 45 hours, assuming that you start with one cell each. Bacteria (45 hours later): Protist (45 hours later): Animal Cell (45 hours later):
