Religion
The Roman people believed that spirits
were real and also guardian gods. They had
gods for several different parts of their
houses. The gods took care of their people,
but if you forget to worship them bad things
will happen to you.
Roman Arts
Romans liked to make sculptures as an
important part of daily life. Many Roman
sculptures were copies of Greek sculptures.
Romans decorated buildings, parks, private
homes, and gardens with sculptures. Romans
made a sculpture out of marble for the first time
in ancient Rome’s empire. Romans also painted
pictures. They decorated houses with paintings.
In Pompeii, a lot of paintings were destroyed, but
some were preserved. They were buried because
of the volcano. Colored tiles are called mosaics.
They were used to make pictures.
Colosseum
Another name for the Colosseum is flavian
amphitheatre. The Colosseum is made of concrete
and stone. The Colosseum is the largest
amphitheatre in Rome. It is considered one of the
greatest structures. It was built in 70 -80 AD. Titus
Vespusian built the Colosseum. The Colosseum can
hold up to 50,000 -80,000 people. It was also for
games.
Gods
Jupiter was the most powerful and king of
the gods. He had a thunderbolt, and if he
wanted to bring order he would hurl his
thunderbolt. Mars was Jupiter's son and the
god of war. Nobody liked mars that much,
not even his own brothers and sisters. Juno
was Jupiter's sister, but she was also his wife.
Juno watched over all the women in Rome.
Neptune was the lord of the sea and brother
of Jupiter. Neptune was powerful and moody.
The City of Rome
The capital of Rome was the city of Rome. The city of
Rome was built on 7 hills. It was located near the west
coast of Italy. Roman belief states the city of Rome was
founded by the half god twins Romulus and Remus. They
had a fight to see who would be the king of Rome.
Romulus won.
The Regia- the original kings live here
The Comitiom- this is where the assembly was held.
Senate Curia- the meeting place of the senate
Temple of Saturn- the temple that worshiped Saturn

Julius Caesar after his death.
The City of Pompeii
The city of Pompeii, during the times of
ancient Rome, was a major resort city. But
in 79 A.D., a disaster struck the city. The
city was covered in 20 feet of ash and
debris. Pompeii was settled around the
7th century B.C. by the Oscan people. The
prime location for trade and farming was
the port city. “The rich volcanic soil from
earlier eruptions of Vesuvius created prime
farmland for grapes and olive trees.”
