First Grade Math Terms Module 1 Number bond – shows the whole and the parts of a number 5-group – a row of five items Count-on – count from one number to the total. Example: 2 + 3 = 5. Start at the larger number (3) and count 2 more (4, 5). Think 3 count 4, 5. Addend – the numbers combined together in an addition problem Expression – math sentence without an equal sign Unknown – the number needed to solve the problem Equation – math sentence with an equal sign Commutative property – 8 + 3 = 11 and 3 + 8 = 11 Doubles – addition facts where addends are the same number. Whenever we make ten, we draw a frame around it so we can see 10 right away. Related facts – two different number sentences that equal the same answer. Example: 9 + 6 and 10 + 5 are related because they both equal 15. Decompose – To break numbers apart Partners to ten – Two numbers that when added together make 10 Teen numbers – numbers between 10 and 20 5-groups – one group of 5
