INTEGERS AND REAL NUMBERS
Whole Numbers : 0,1,2,3,4 …..
Integers : Whole numbers and their opposites.
…. -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ….
Addends: Numbers that are added together.
Absolute Value: Distance from zero
Sum: The answer to an addition problem.
Addend + Addend = Sum
Rules for addition:
positive + positive = positive
negative + negative = negative
positive + negative = positive or negative depending
on the addend with the greater
absolute value.
Difference : The answer to a subtraction problem.
Rule for subtraction:
To subtract a number you add the opposite
Product; The answer to a multiplication problem.
Factors: Numbers that are multiplied together.
Factor x Factor = Product
Rules for multiplication:
positive X positive = positive
negative X negative = positive
positive X negative = negative
When there is an even number of negative factors, the product is positive.
When there is an odd number of negative factors, the product is negative.
Reciprocal = The flip of a fraction
Examples: 2/3, 3/2
8, 1/8
1/7, 7
4 ½, 2/9
5/2, 2/5
Quotient: The answer to a division problem
Rules for division:
positive divided by a positive = positive
negative divided by a negative = positive
positive divided by a negative = negative
negative divided by a positive = negative
