What is the distributive
property?
The technical answer: the DISTRIBUTIVE
PROPERTY states that when you multiply the
sum of two or more addends by a factor, the
product is the same as if you multiplied each
addend by the factor and then added the partial
products.
But what does THAT
mean?
Words that make sense (hopefully):
When you have a factor (number to multiply) in a
math problem, and two addends (numbers to add
together), you can multiply the factor by one
addend, then multiply the factor by the other
addend, and add the two answers together.
Here’s an example
6 x (4 + 10)
Step one: Distribute the 6.
That means, multiply the 6 times the 4.
6 x 4 = 24
Then, multiply the 6 times the 10.
6 x 10 = 60
Step two: add the two partial products (the two answers you
got) together.
24 + 60 = 84
More examples
7 x (3 + 6)
8 x (2 + 5)
1: 7 x 3 = 21
7 x 6 = 42
1: 8 x 2 = 16
8 x 5 = 40
2: 21 + 42 = 63
2: 16 + 40 = 56
Practice
Solve the following problems using
the distributive property
1:
5 x (4 + 3)
2:
6 x (2 + 1 )
3: 9 x (5 + 3)
