Chapter: 4 Lesson: 9 Write and Evaluate Multiply/Divide Expressions
Anticipatory Set
Objective
pg. 106
Go over definition of variable, expression, product.
Write and evaluate expressions.
Variable: represents an unknown number
Numerical expression: (word structure) A mathematical phrase that combines
numbers, operation signs, and sometimes variables, but doesn't have an equal sign
Evaluate: solve
Input
Steps:
1. put x/÷ sign above multiply/divide words
2. put “n” above a number
3. write both possibilities of the expression
4. box both last parts. Choose the one that matches the words.
 “A number divided by 10” 10 is doing the dividing…it is the divisor (doing the
work). Give an example of someone doing a job.
Modeling
 If a number sits right next to a variable, it means to multiply both of them. 8f
means 8 x f
Show 2 examples.
1) What is the product of g and 18?
2) A number divided by 7.
3) If d=6, what is 42 ÷ d?
