Addition of Integers
What do I do?
What sign do I use?
If…SAME SIGNS – Add numbers
normally
+ plus + = +
- plus - = -
If…DIFFERENT SIGNS – Subtract smaller
number from larger number
Take sign of larger number
Example please!
6+4=
6 + 4 = 10 (Both signs are positive
so your answer is positive)
-6 + -4 =
6 + 4 = 10
= -10 (Both signs are negative so
answer is negative)
-6 + 4 =
6–4=2
= -2 (6 is the larger number and it
is negative so your answer is
negative)
Subtraction of Integers
What do I do?
What sign do I use?
1.) Change the subtraction sign to an
addition sign
2.) Change the sign of the second
+ changes to –
number to the opposite sign
- changes to +
NOW FOLLOW THE RULES OF ADDITION…..
If…SAME SIGNS – Add #s normally
+ plus + = +
- plus - = Take sign of larger number
Example please!
6 – (- 4) =
6 + (- 4) =
6 + (+4) =
6+4=
6 + 4 = 10 (Both signs are positive
so your answer is positive)
-6 + -4 =
6 + 4 = 10
= -10 (Both signs are negative so
answer is negative)
If…DIFFERENT SIGNS – Subtract smaller
# from larger #
Take sign of larger number
-6 + 4 =
6–4=2
= -2 (6 is the larger number and it
is negative so your answer is
negative)
