Objectives

• classify the finite verb.
• identify the principal verbs and the auxiliary
verbs.
• find out transitive and intransitive verbs.
• Find out primary and modal auxiliary verbs.
DEFINITION OF VERB:
• A Verb is a word that denotes being or
having or doing or an action in any form.
such as:
• 1. Being verb - The man is honest.
• 2. Having verb- I have a sharp knife.
• 3.Doing verb – The boy kicks the ball.
• 4.An action in any form- The moon looks bright.

Mainly there are two kinds of verb. Such as1.Finite Verb
2.Non-Finite Verb
1.Finite Verb :The verb which completes the speech of a sentence is
called Finite Verb. Such as – Ovi reads a book.
2.Non- Finite Verb: The verb which does not complete the speech
of a sentence is called Non-Finite Verb. Such as- Binoy wants
to go to school.

CLASSIFICATION OF FINITE VERB
# There are two types of Finite Verb. Such as-
1.Principal Verb
2. Auxiliary Verb
Definition of Principal verb and Auxiliary verb
1.Principal verb : When a verb
expresses its meaning without the help of any other verb, it is
called a principal verb. Such as :
Karim is a boy,
I have a book.
The boy eats a mango.
2. Auxiliary verb : The verb which helps a principal verb in
expressing its meaning in accordance with tense, voice or mood, is called
an Auxiliary verb. Such as :
The boy is reading a book .
I have lost my pen.

CLASSIFICATION OF PRINCIPAL VERB
Principal verb
Transitive
Intransitive
Transitive Verb: The verb which needs another word to complete its sense is
called Transitive Verb. Such as – He has eaten a mango.
Intransitive Verb: The verb which does not need another word to complete
its full meaning is called Intransitive verb. Such as – The moon shines.

1. Primary Auxiliary Verb: The verb which changes its form according to tense
and person is called Primary Auxiliary Verb. Such as :
Be (am, is, are, was, were, been, being ).Have (have, has, had ).Do (do, does, did)
2. Modal Auxiliary Verb: The verb which has only one form and no add
`ing`,`ed`,`s or es`with it is called Modal Auxiliary Verb. Such as : Can, could,
may, might, shall, should, will, would, ought to, dare, need, have to, used to etc.
