How to naturally raise your Human Growth Hormone levels By Dr John Pridgeon HGH is an anabolic hormone that is produced by the somatotrophic cells in your anterior pituitary gland, it is a protein containing 196 amino acids. 40% of the anterior pituitary is composed of somatotrophic cells It is called “the master hormone” because of its role in the proper functioning of so many bodily systems Growth hormone will increase / improve / enhance lean body mass, energy levels and vitality, hormonal regulation, immune function, sexual performance and libido, cardiac output, capacity for exercise, skin elasticity, vision, cerebral function, sleep quality, bone mass, cholesterol profiles and decrease body fat, cellulite, wrinkles, arthritis and blood pressure It is the most powerful anti-aging molecule causing almost all of the cells and tissues of the body to regenerate repair and replicate by positively affecting protein synthesis During body growth HGH increases the size and number of cells in the body and helps wi5th cell differentiation, also causing the formation of cells that lay down bone and cartilage, which function continues well past the time when bones stop lengthening and linear body growth stops HGH causes a decrease in the utilisation of protein for energy production and increases the mobilisation of fat as an energy source, burning fat in preference to protein and carbohydrates, also increasing glycogen formation HGH exerts its influence via the production of somatomedins by the liver in response to HGH secretion by the anterior pituitary, the most important of these is somatomedin C or Insulin like Growth Factor -1. It is normally released in 4-6 short bursts per day and is only around for a short period of time before being rapidly taken up by the liver and other tissues – IGF-1 is then released very slowly buy the liver, and can be found present in the blood up to 20 hours later Ultimately the control of the secretion of HGH is performed by a negative feedback loop that is governed by release of HGRH (meditropin) and GHIH (somatostatin) Somatopause is the name given to the decline in HGH secretion after the age of 20 years – about 14% per decade of life. The protein in the tissues is replaced with fat and this gives the appearance of aging, as does decrease in muscle mass and strength, decrease in organ function and wrinkling of the skin This may be due to a decrease in GHRH and GHRH precursors, because of decreasing supply of the specific amino acids that make upo this hormone (less HCl in older stomachs, commonly found in degenerative diseases and increased consumption of alcohol, carbs, sugar, caffeine and refined foods; high levels of glucose also reduce GHRH activity, as does stress – cortisol stimulates the release of somatostatin – and obesity an increase of GHIH, stress and trauma may cause this as well as a decrease in the pituitary’s ability to be stimulated by GHRH, via a decrease in choline and its precursor alpha glyceryl phosphoryl choline a decrease of the GHRH receptors in the anterior pituitary Contrary to modern “wisdom” the aging pituitary is quite capable of producing adequate levels of growth hormone, causing increased stamina, libido, improved body composition, tissue healing and the amelioration of the signs and symptoms of aging Natural methods of improving HGH secretion include the use of nutrients to stimulate HGH secretion by the pituitary appropriate diet to increase HGH output and decrease inhibition by GHIH appropriate exercise to stimulate HGH secretion the prevention of inhibitory factors the provision of the correct precursors Oral HGH is rendered useless by stomach acids. HGH must be injected Oral secretogogues will raise HGH levels by stimulating its secretion, but a number of factors need to be addressed before the pituitary can optimally make and release HGH 1. the pituitary needs to be directly stimulated 2. precursors for HGH manufacture need to make it directly to the pituitary 3. factors that inhibit HGH release need to be managed effectively (fluctuating sugar levels, adrenal stress and weakness, and stress in general) HGH injections: Recombinant DNA technology uses E coli to synthesise HGH. In 1990 Dr Daniel Rudman showed in a very controversial paper that you could reverse the effects of aging by replacing HGH by injection. The trial was done on men aged 61-81, doses were given to bring IGF-1 levels to those of a young man – biological age was reversed by about 20 years, there was an 8.8% increase in lean body mass, and a fat loss of 14%, improved BMD and reversed skin and muscle atrophy. Certain side effects were noted (raised BP, carpal tunnel syndrome, antibody development, joint pain, insulin resistance, water retention) and these and the terrific cost of this injections prompted the development of secretogogues, amino acids and botanicals that stimulated HGH secretion by the pituitary gland. Substances that naturally raise HGH – the second Generation secretogoues Alpha glyceryl phosphoro choline αGPC – specialised AA 1. enhances the receptivity of the cellular membrane of the somatotrophic cells of the anterior pituitary to GHRH (also to ACTH, FSH / LH, and TSH) 2. boosts HGH by increasing GHRH output 3. decreases somatostatin 4. improves muscular strength and cognitive function 5. lowers homocysteine GABA – AA that is a neurotransmitter 1. potent stimulator of HGH release 2. improves sleep cycle, calms nervous system 3. stimulates protein synthesesis and release of FFF from adipocyte Ornithine alpha ketoglucarate OKG – precursor of glutamine and arginine, both strong HGH secretogogues 1. stimulates secretion and enhances effects of HGH 2. reduces healing time, relieves post exercise muscle stress, improves lining of GIT 3. immune modulator, increases cytotoxic activity Branch chain AAs – Valine and Leucine 1. increase HGH output 2. increase protein synthesis, anabolic properties L-Arginine – 1,200-2,400mg 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. HGH secretogogue - inhibits somatostatin increases response of somatotrophic cells of pituitary to GHRH works synergistically with lysine blood vessel dilatation – increases blood flow, lowers BP improves tissue repair L-Lysine – 1,200mg 1. works well only in combination with L-Arginine 2. may promote bone growth 3. boosts HGH secretion L-Glutamine 1. increases secretion of GHRH 2. improve cognition and GIT lining 3. is a primary energy source for immune cells L-Tyrosine 1. essential for thyroid hormone synthesis 2. also essential for production of dopamine, adrenaline and nor adrenaline 3. improves athletic performance L-Glycine 1. improves tissue repair, muscle development 2. stimulates HGH secretion 3. essential component of glutathione Mucuna pruriens 1. richest natural source of L-dopa 2. increases HGH secretion 3. increases libido and boosts testosterone Mumie (also Moomivo or Shilajoit) 1. 2. 3. 4. increases strength remedies declining mental function promotes muscle growth anti inflammatory / arthritis treats allergies by stabilising immune cells The effectiveness of these seems to be compromised by taking them orally, they lack an effective delivery system, which has prompted the delivery fo the 3rd Generation secretogogues. These use a unique delivery system that bypasses the gut and deliver direct to the pituitary using liposomes – these are made with phopholipids and can fuse themselves directly to cellular membranes and release their contents directly into the cell. Targeted liposomal delivery suing a “key” that targets pituitary cell receptors may increase IGF-1 by 25% with no additional side effects The ideal secretogogue should have a liposomal targeted delivery system contain nutrients that stimulate the pituitary and supply HGH precursors be made by a reputable company with a documented success rate presence of fillers and preservatives be taken last thing at night, first thing in the morning to mimic natural output best also one hour before exercise (which is also a strong stimulator of HGH secretion) Cycling your course is unnecessary with secretogogues (vs injectable HGH) Secretogogues may be safely used without increasing any cancer risk, as natural control mechanisms are not interfered with. Anyone over 40 should consider using secretogogues, but they are especially useful after hysterectomy in obese or overweight people people with chronic degenerative disease post trauma or surgery NOT if you have active cancer if taken in conjunction with dietary, exercise and lifestyle changes Exercise as a way to stimulate HGH secretion: The higher the intensity, the greater the stimulation. Interval training combines short 15-90 second high intensity (anaerobic) exercise within longer periods of about 300 second lower intensity (aerobic) exercises. Exercising above the lactic acid threshold (lactic acid is produced faster than it can be cleared) is one of the strongest stimuli for HGH production. You can lose up to 9 times more fat in half the time it takes people who do not use the lactic acid threshold to their advantage, even though they did more than twice the exercise and lost double the calories. A few caveats are worth considering regarding exercise: make sure you are capable of the exercise – have an exam / an ECG etc if you are not sure your body can take it overtraining is worse for you than no training set realistic goals the lower your glucose levels are during exercise, the greater the HGH spike produced – at least 3 hours after a meal take a secretogoue 30 minutes prior to exercise eat a high protein low carb meal 15-45 minutes after your workout to sustain the HGH secretion IGF-1 will remain high for 20 hours following a burst of HGH interval training of 30-60 minutes 3-5 times a week is ideal the hormonal shift during exercise is away from storage hormones like insulin, toward fuel mobilising hormones like HGH use as many different muscles as possible, upper and lower body together, use weights for upper body, lift for 4-5 secs and return to neutral while not releasing completely, keeping muscle tension Other lifestyle changes that help: remove sources of toxicity: limit alcohol, stop smoking limit stress reduce high blood sugar levels – low carb, low GI carb diet improve sleep supplements and omega 3 fat intake are useful adjuncts – you are tomorrow what you eat today
