Name: Possible answers Date: Question: How does food break down in your body? (Write your hypothesis as a complete sentence in the space below. Your hypothesis should include the processes and organs involved in breaking down food.) Suggested responses may include: I eat food and poop it out. Digestion begins with chewing. Food enters the mouth and is swallowed and then travels down the esophagus to the stomach. Food then enters the small intestine, the large intestine is the last location before exiting the body through the anus. Write your answer as a five sentence paragraph. Include the organs involved and what processes happen in each organ. Use the back of this paper if needed. Your teeth break down the food by chewing. Saliva softens the food and helps in breaking down the food. Without teeth you can not digest large pieces of food. The acids in the stomach turn solid food into liquid so it can be digested by the small intestine. The length of the small intestine slows down the time it takes food to travel. Slowing down the food allows nutrients to be absorbed to help you stay alive. There are both good and bad bacteria in the large intestine. Eliminating any of these organs interrupts the entire digestive system. All of these organs must work together interdependently.
