Layers of the Earth Poster Project Instructions and Grading
Objective: Sketch and Label the major layers of the Earth, showing the
approximate relative thicknesses and consistency of the crust, core, and mantle.
Assignment:
Students are responsible for creating an informational poster about the layers of the Earth.
The purpose is to identify the Earth’s layers and describe their physical characteristics (i.e.
thickness, viscosity, temperature, etc.). Students are expected to successfully present
information in a clear, concise, format.
STEP ONE: Read and complete ALL pages in Science Text book for Layers of the
Atmosphere
STEP TWO: Complete a rough draft of the layout and then get a template paper from
Mrs. Tan
STEP THREE: Complete final poster using the following criteria.
Drawing(s), Coloring: You can get a template paper from Mrs. Tan or draw your
own

Must include a scale drawing of the Earth’s layers including a closer look at the
layers near the Earth’s surface.
Content:
Properly identify the layers of the Earth on your drawing and provide a separate
description of the characteristics for each layer.

Layers:
a. Inner Core
b. Outer Core
c. Mantle
d. Asthenosphere
e.
f.
g.
h.
Lithosphere
Crust
Continental Crust
Oceanic Crust
 Characteristics: Look at the PPT notes given in class or look on our class website
These are some things you should include, but are not everything. You should write at least
three or four sentences.
a. Thickness – How thick is the layer? (use Kilometers)
b. Material – What is its primary mineral content or rock type?
c. Temperature – Be specific and use Celsius scale
 Interesting or Fun Fact: Pre-AP/GT ONLY
Should be one paragraph (about 4 sentences) describing some feature, function, or
miscellaneous fact about the interior of the Earth and/or its layers.
Layout/Visual Appeal: There are sample of completed posters to look at on the class
website and in the classroom
Drawing should be in color, neat, have “good flow”, and be easy to read. The Title
should be in large print (about one inch tall). You also include your names, date, and period
in top right corner or directly under the title.
Legibility:
I should be able to “easily” read what you have. Typing is best however do not use large
font. Include large labels (about ¾ inch tall), medium-large font. Use accurate spelling.
Grading:
Drawing(s)
= 30 points
Content
= 40 points
Layout/Visual Appeal
= 15 points
Legibility
= 15 points

Total = 100 points total
