Possible Teacher Demonstration of Relative age
Use everyday objects to model the concept of relative age in
that different layers of Earth are different ages. Obtain several
sheets of colored construction paper. Place one sheet on the
bottom of a tray and tape several everyday objects in place
(buttons, erasers, crayons, etc.). Repeat, using three or four
layers of paper with objects taped in place. Present the “layers
of objects” to the class. Have volunteers remove each layer
one at a time and record the objects in a chart in order from
top (youngest) to bottom (oldest). Point out that objects in the
bottom layer were placed there before others, and so have
been there the longest, just as rocks and fossils at deeper
levels of Earth have usually been formed, or deposited, earlier
than those at Earth’s surface.
