RNA editing
After Transcription, the mRNA strand goes through some changes before Translation.
Much like the first draft of a paper you write, many mRNA molecules require some editing
before Translation at the ribosome.
The genes in eukaryotic DNA contain sequences of nucleotides that do not code for amino
acids. These sequences are called INTRONS.
The sequences in a gene that DO code for amino acids are called EXONS.
During Transcription, both introns and exons are transcribed. However, the introns are cut out
of the mRNA strand while it is still in the nucleus. The remaining exons are spliced together to
form the final mRNA strand.
Other modifications to the mRNA strand
An "mg-cap" is added to the beginning of the mRNA strand. This cap helps the mRNA strand
position itself in the ribosome so that the start codon (AUG) is the first codon translated in the
protein.
A "poly-Adenine tail" is added to the end of the mRNA strand. This poly-A tail slows down the
digestion of the mRNA strand into RNA nucleotides. This insures the mRNA strands are not
digested prior to Translation into a protein.

This final mRNA is ready to be translated into a
protein sequence.........or is it????
