Geography of Greece
• Mountainous
• Peninsula
• Near Mediterranean Sea
Think-PairShare
What challenges did
this type of geography
bring to the lives of the
Greek people?
The challenges were…
• hard to travel
• little communication
• lack of flat land to farm
How did they deal with it?
They established city-states in
far away lands. They used the
sea to trade.
On your own!
How did the large distances
between Greek city-states
affect their ability to
communicate with each
other?
Why was it a
challenge for one
ruler to govern
multiple Greek citystates?
How did they develop differently?
ATHENS SPARTA
You need to include
ON BOTH SIDES:
• Government
• Values
• Women’s Lives
What was the ONE
thing they had in
common?
(hint: besides language!)
What did this victory mean for
the Greeks?
Athens had been burnt to the ground and
was in ruins. The Athenians saw this as a
time to revamp!
Using context clues, what does it mean to revamp?
GOLDEN AGE OF ATHENS
Golden Age: a period of great peace and wealth
Between 479 BCE and 431 BCE Athens
was the artistic and cultural center of
Greece.
“We have not forgotten to provide for our weary
(tired) spirits many relaxations from toil (hard
work); we have regular games and sacrifices
throughout the year; our homes are beautiful and
elegant; and the delight which we daily feel in all
these things helps to banish (send away) sorrow.
Due to the greatness of our city the fruits of the
whole earth flow in upon us; so that we enjoy the
goods of other countries as freely as our own. To
sum up I say that Athens is the school of Greece.
Such is the city for whose sake these men nobly
fought and died.”
-Pericles, Funeral Speech
1. According to Pericles, what made Athens
great?
2. Why do you think Pericles would call Athens
the “school of Greece”?
What made Athens flourish?
• Architecture
• Religion
• Drama/Theater
• Philosophy
• Sports
Religion
• Polytheistic (??)
• The gods looked and acted like humans, but
never grew old or died.
• Each god or goddess had power over a
particular area of life
– Zeus Ruler of all gods
– Poseidon god of the sea
– Ares god of war
– Aphrodite goddess of love and beauty
– Dionysus god of theater and wine
Architecture
• Built lavish, huge and beautiful temples for
their gods
• One of the most famous was the Parthenon
which was built to honor Athena
• The temples were built with rows of tall
columns
Drama/Theater
• Going to the theater was a regular part of
Athenian life
• The Theater of Dionysus was the main theater.
• Men played all
the characters,
but wore masks
when portraying
women.
Philosophy
• Means “the love of wisdom”
– Who was the goddess of wisdom?
• Men gathered and discussed current ideas.
– Example: meaning of life, beauty and truth
• Socrates said, “I am the wisest man in Greece
because I know that I don’t know anything!”
Sports
• Boxing/Wrestling
– The event ended when one fighter surrendered, lost
consciousness, or died.
• Running
• Chariot racing
• Winners of games were
crowned with laurel leaves
• These games began in
neighborhoods, but still
occur today.
What are they called?
Now, pick 3 of
your favorite
reasons why
Athens thrived!
Write them on your graphic organizer!
